Origin: WEST AFRICA

A fetish is an object of power used ritualistically, primarily for the purpose of gaining control or power over others. Originally a facet of the West African religious cults, the concept was worked into the western consciousness over the 17th and 18th centuries.

In the west, it is sometimes associated with African voodoo, the origin of Haitian voudoun, American voodoo, and American hoodoo or swamp magic.

Fetishes may be simple or complex, and are created with materials that are relevant to the type of power the creator wishes to acquire.
